BASIC PURPOSE: Provides delegated patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse and Physician. This position serves the following patient age categories: neonatal, pediatrics, adolescent, adult and geriatric. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 1. Provides direct patient care appropriate to patient's condition, needs and/or age. A. Obtains initial vital signs and monitors according to department policy, notifying nurse of all deviations from the norm. B. Assists the nurse and/or physician with procedures. C. Performs delegated procedures, surgical preps, wound care, clean and sterile dressings, urinary catheterizations, staple and suture removal. D. Provides immediate treatment of injuries including immobilization, hemorrhage control and infection control. 2. Maintains a safe, efficient and clean patient environment. A. Ensures that all specialty carts are clean and well stocked. B. Establishes and implements plan by which all EMS equipment is returned to proper EMS system. C. Completes all work orders for maintenance and repair of equipment; ensures all equipment is clean and in good working order. D. Orders and maintains supplies for the department. E. Collects non-controlled medications, distributing to appropriate licensed personnel on the unit. 3. Demonstrates behaviors that incorporate the Cone Health System values. A. Demonstrates appropriate use of universal precautions and personal protective equipment. F. Demonstrates adherence to established dress code. G. Completes mandatory requirements: 1. Completes mandatory education: CPR, Fire/Safety, Blood Borne Pathogens, Safe Medical Devices, TB, Utilities Management Failure, Health and Safety Plan, Falls Prevention and Department-specific. 2. Obtains TB testing per schedule 3. Maintains current license or listing. H. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. 5. Collaborates with co-workers to accomplish department/program objectives. 6. Lead Role Only: Serves as a role model and resource person for the department. A. Precepts new EMTs. B. Assists with development and evaluation of competency based orientation for EMTs. C. Monitors EMT checklist daily and communicates concerns to nurse director or designee. D. Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing with all members of health care team and patient/family. E. Assists with maintaining supplies in department. F. Maintains strong liaisons with Lab, Xray, SPD, Laundry, and other ancillary services.
